Abdominal Ultrasounds, Digital Xrays and Echocardiograms

Crescent Street Veterinary Hospital is proud to offer advanced imaging services with board certified radiologists to ensure your pet receives the highest quality of care.

Understanding Diagnostic Imaging

These imaging techniques involve non-invasive diagnostic tools that use sound waves to create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs.

The abdominal ultrasound allows for the observation of organs in the belly: liver, spleen, stomach, kidneys, bladder, intestines, and lymph nodes. Ultrasound is used to investigate symptoms such as vomiting, changes in urination, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain.

Echocardiograms are used for the evaluation of the heart, vessels, and the movement of blood in the chest. Common indications for this service include a heart murmur, an abnormal heartbeat, and coughing.

Digital radiology, also known as digital X-rays, uses advanced imaging technology to create detailed pictures of your pet’s bones and internal organs. This non-invasive diagnostic tool helps our veterinary team quickly spot issues such as broken bones, arthritis, or internal illnesses.

Results and Follow-up

Once the X-rays, echocardiogram, or abdominal ultrasound are completed, the board-certified specialist compiles a detailed report of the findings. Our doctors call promptly to review the results with you, explain the findings, and discuss any recommended follow-up tests or treatments. We prioritize clear communication and transparency, so you leave with a solid understanding and a clear plan for your pet’s health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my pet need to be sedated for an ultrasound?

Most pets require no sedation; however, if your pet is anxious, we use fear-free techniques and may request to administer light sedation for maximum comfort.

How to prepare for echocardiogram?

There is no shaving of fur, and no fasting required prior to the echocardiogram. You will continue giving all previously prescribed medications.

How to prepare for Xrays?

Usually, no special preparation is needed. To maintain a fear-free experience, sometimes sedation is required. Our team will guide you with specific instructions if this is the case. Aftercare is minimal, and pets typically return to normal activity right away.

Is It Necessary to Shave My Pet’s Fur?

Yes, for the abdominal ultrasound. In most cases, the fur on the belly must be shaved to perform an abdominal ultrasound examination. Since ultrasound waves are not transmitted through air, it is imperative that the hand-held probe makes complete contact with the skin.
